Creating space and sharing the burden

It is exam season in the UK Universities and we are approaching the end of the academic year – students and staff are a bit more frazzled than usual and there is quite a lot of stress around.

This year at Goldsmiths we have created ‘The Snug’ a space in the heart of the university where students can find a bit of peace and quiet, chat to someone if they need to, and just generally share their concerns and anxieties rather than carrying them alone.

Working in this space reminds me of the gospel text:

My yoke is easy and my burden light. (Matthew 11)

A yoke binds two or more animals together so that they can share a burden and most effectively carry it. Often the burdens that people carry have to be carried by them, but being beside them along the way, being companions, enables them to carry it with more ease.
