Spring, new life and lent

by

robinOne of the things I love about Lent in England is that each year the inward journey is mirrored by the outward change in nature.

This year we have had an unusually mild winter, so lent didn’t begin with frost and there were some spring flowers already peeping out. Still, it was bleak in a different way – there were signs of life but no signs of the normal exuberance of spring… no insects buzzing around the new blooms, no fresh green buds above the crocus flowers. It was as though there was life but not joy.

Over the last week though we have seen a change – the sun has come again, and in the middle of the day there is warmth. In the garden there are signs of growth and greening.

The slow progress through Lent can be similar – weeks of little growth and no real sense of transformation and then looking back perhaps we notice that the green shoots came without our realising it.
