The Holy Spirit – The capacity to love

by

nepalWhen I see the news or meet someone who is suffering I am often really moved. Seeing their pain draws a response of love and compassion from me. This is a basic capacity of our humanity – that we can feel an emotional connection, empathy and compassion for people we have never met or who are not related to us.

This quality brings about change. It leads us to generosity, patience, self sacrifice, understanding… It awakens in us a desire that things might be different. It inspires hope and leads us to action.

The capacity to love in this way is a gift to the world. It is a way in which we see the Spirit of God at work. Of course, there are also times where we remain unmoved, anesthetised to the suffering of others – when we don’t respond in love but out of a self seeking interest. As we approach the wonderful feast of Pentecost may we experience God’s spirit leading us to more love, union and more compassionate solidarity.

… the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galations 5:22 – 23
