BASKETS FULL OF STONES…

I went away for the weekend to a house far out of the city.  I was there with my community – we were there for a weekend of prayer and to spend time reflecting on our life together as religious sisters.  The house is near a river.  Throughout the weekend a constant stream of women walked back and forth from the river carrying large baskets full of boulders and stones on their backs.  The stones are used in buildings.  The women are paid less than 1000 rupiah (less than 8 pence) for each basket of stones.  Even working all day they earn less than a living wage.  Most of the women are painfully thin and the older women are bent and worn by their heavy labour.  It was humbling to witness the struggle of those women to make a living and a challenge to be grateful for all the good things I have and to live far, far more simply…
