Finding silence

by

Did any of you watch The Big Silence? It was on BBC for the last three Fridays. The programme took 5 ‘ordinary’ people and introduced them to silence by having them participate in an 8 day silent retreat at St Beuno’s Jesuit retreat house in Wales. After the retreat, the participants were encouraged to continue to find opportunities for silence in their everyday lives. The effect that this period of silence had on their lives was incredible.

It leaves me considering how I find silence in the ordinary moments of my life – obviously, as a religious, I have opportunities for silence, for prayer and for reflection built in to my ordinary day, but there can also be a silence and stillness that can be found in activities too ; not always filling every moment with noise, chatter or distraction; being still and reflective on the bus or in a queue… It’s these moments that can provide real refreshment as they are opportunities to glimpse a greater purpose in the midst of what can appear to be very ordinary. An opportunity to glimpse God.
