Through this door is our world, inviting us into its beauty and diversity, its suffering and need. (FCJ Chapter Decree 2008)

by

Less than two weeks ago I wrote about a joyful wedding in our village, today I am struck at the way suffering and joy constantly rub shoulders here in our small piece of the world. This week we have mourned with a family in our village whose child died shortly after birth. In another house a short distance away an elderly woman is gradually moving towards death. For some years our novices have helped to take care of her. Earlier this week I listened to the story of a young man who wept as he related how his wife has left him and taken their infant son with her. What else can we do except be there and be silent yet supportive companions at such solemn and tragic moments?
